Myopia Control

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a condition in which distant objects look out of focus and can start from early childhood and increase into adulthood. The causes of myopia are both genetic and environmental. Lifestyle factors such as limited outdoor time, reading, phone use and other near work can cause the eye to lengthen, causing light rays to improperly focus on the retina. Nearsightedness not only diminishes your child's vision but also affects their performance in school, sports and other daily activities.

If you are concerned about your child's increasing prescription, our office provides myopia management programs with multifocal soft contact lenses or rigid ortho-k lenses.

What is Myopia Control?

Myopia control is the term used to describe specific treatments to slow the progression of nearsightedness due to the elongation of the eye during growth. It is important because it can significantly reduce the risk of vision-threatening complications associated with high myopia later in life, such as glaucoma and retinal detachment.
